Nail Trimming for Dogs & Cats in Cornwall
We clip or grind your pet's nails quickly and safely so they stay comfortable and healthy.
Why Regular Nail Trims Matter
Long nails hurt. They change how your dog or cat walks, putting pressure on joints and paws. Over time that leads to pain, limping, even arthritis. Nails that curl under can dig into paw pads and cause infections.
Most pets need a trim every 3-6 weeks. You'll hear clicking on hard floors when it's time. We see a lot of dogs in Cornwall who've gone too long between trims - owners worry about hitting the quick or the pet won't sit still. That's exactly why we're here.
Regular trims keep the quick from growing out. The quick is the blood vessel inside the nail. When nails stay long, the quick extends, making future trims harder. Short nails mean healthier paws and less stress for everyone.
How We Handle Nail Trimming
We offer clipping or grinding, depending on what your pet tolerates best. Clipping is fast - we use sharp guillotine or scissor-style clippers and take just the tip. Grinding uses a rotary tool to file the nail smooth. It's quieter for some pets, louder for others. We'll try both and see what works.
Dark nails are trickier because you can't see the quick. We take small cuts and watch for a grey or pink spot in the center. If we do nick the quick (it happens), we use styptic powder to stop bleeding instantly. Your pet might yelp but it's not dangerous - think of it like a paper cut.
Nervous pets get extra time. We don't rush. If your cat hisses or your dog pulls away, we work in stages. Sometimes we'll do two paws today, two next week. Building trust matters more than finishing fast. Many clients pair nail trims with Dog Grooming or Cat Grooming appointments so it's all done in one visit.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Nail trims take 10-15 minutes for most dogs and cats. You can stay in the room or wait up front - whatever keeps your pet calmer. We'll have them sit or lie on a non-slip mat. For wiggly puppies or anxious cats, a second set of hands helps.
We check every nail, including dewclaws if your pet has them. Dewclaws sit higher on the leg and don't touch the ground, so they never wear down naturally. They're easy to forget but they'll curl into a circle if left too long. We trim them at no extra charge.
After the trim we'll file any sharp edges. You'll hear the difference when your dog walks across the lobby - no more tap-tap-tap. If you're coming from Long Sault or Ingleside, it's worth the short drive to avoid the stress of doing it yourself at home.
Nail Trimming for Anxious Pets
Some pets panic at the sight of clippers. Maybe they had a bad experience, or they just hate having their paws touched. We get it. We've worked with hundreds of anxious animals in Cornwall and the surrounding areas.
Desensitization helps. If your pet is extremely fearful, we might recommend a few short visits where we just touch their paws and give treats. No clipping. Once they're comfortable, we'll try one nail. Then two. It takes patience but it works. For dogs who need extra help relaxing, pairing a trim with our Deshedding Treatment can make the whole session feel less intense.
We don't use sedation - we're groomers, not vets. If your pet truly can't be handled safely, we'll refer you to a vet clinic that can do nails under light sedation. But most of the time, a calm voice and a gentle grip are enough.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I get my dog's nails trimmed?
Most dogs need a trim every 3-6 weeks. If you hear clicking on hard floors, it's time. Active dogs who walk on pavement might wear their nails down naturally and only need trims every 6-8 weeks. Indoor cats usually need it every 4-6 weeks because they don't scratch on rough surfaces as much.
What if my pet won't let me touch their paws?
That's super common. We handle anxious pets every day. Start by touching their paws at home for a few seconds, then give a treat. Do that daily for a week. When you bring them in, let us know they're nervous - we'll go slow and use lots of praise. Some pets do better with grinding instead of clipping because there's no sudden snip sound.
Can you trim my rabbit's or guinea pig's nails?
We focus on dogs and cats, so we don't offer small-animal nail trims. Rabbit and guinea pig nails grow differently and need specific handling. Your best bet is an exotics vet - they'll have the right tools and experience for small pets.
